In 2007, with its future development concept International Network University, Freie Universität Berlin succeeded in winning a major government funding award in the German Excellence Initiative. This award acknowledges special academic achievements, giving the title University of Excellence. Freie Universität Berlin was able to maintain its excellence status in 2012, one among only a few other select universities to do so. The second phase of this program focuses on the expansion of international and regional networks and the advancement of junior researchers supported by the Career Path Model.

To meet these goals, Freie Universität Berlin is setting up several Dahlem International Network Professorships (DINP). Please find below calls of application for the professorship positions at different departments.

1. Institute for Latin American Studies (LAI) and the Department of History and Cultural Studies (Friedrich Meinecke Institute) at Freie Universität invite applications in Latin American History since 1800 with a focus on Global History and/or the History of Migration (salary grade W 2; 5 years).

The successful applicant is expected to participate in the International Research Training Group Between Spaces, in the focus area Center for Area Studies (Network for Area Histories) and in upcoming interdisciplinary research initiatives. She or he will also be willing to participate in Freie Universität Berlin’s continued efforts to internationalize its activities.

2. Department of History and Cultural Studies Seminar of Arabic and Semitic Studies at Freie Universität Berlin invites applications in Arabic Philology focusing on early modern textual practices (salary grade W 1)

The successful candidate is expected to direct a junior research group on the theme of early modern Arabic philology (esp. from the perspective of a global history of knowledge and the encounter with European scholarship). The candidate will contribute courses to the BA and MA in Arabic Studies (Arabistik), covering the early modern period in Arabic and in translation, and collaborate with the faculty in Arabistik in developing and supporting the curriculum. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School for Literary Studies and develop international research projects with partners in the Arab world, as well as engage with non-university partner institutions in Berlin, especially with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Forum Transregionale Studien.

3. Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy , Institute of Biology at Freie Universität Berlin invites applications for a Professorship in Epigenetics of Plants (salary grade W 2; 5 years)

The successful candidate will have experience in teaching biology, especially in the field of epigenetics of plants and epigenetic adaptations of plants caused by changing environmental conditions and stress. She/He will participate in existing and upcoming research associations of the department, especially in the Collaborative Research Center 973 Priming and Memory of Organismic Responses to Stress and the Berlin-Brandenburg Institute of Advanced Biodiversity Research (BBIB).

4. Department of History and Cultural Studies East Asian Studies and Middle Eastern Studies – Institute of Chinese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin invite applications for a Professorship in Pre-modern Chinese History and Culture (salary grade W 2; 5 years)

The appointee will have a specialization in teaching and research in the field of the pre-modern Chinese history (Song to Qing Dynasties) with a focus on the history of ideas or cultural history. International teaching experience and excellent research results are required as well as experience with acquiring funding for, and carrying out externally funded research.

5. Department of Political and Social Sciences, Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science Freie Universität Berlin,
invites applications for a Junior Professorship in Political Science and International Relations (salary grade W 1)

The successful candidate will have an excellent PhD in Political Science and International Relations and the capacity to engage in transdisciplinary research. She or he will have knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods of the Social Sciences and have experience in research on international organizations.

The appointee will manage a Junior Research Group on the topic Political and Discursive Actorhood of International Organizations.

6. Department of Political and Social Sciences, Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science Freie Universität Berlin
invites applications for a Junior Professorship in Empirical Conflict Research focusing on sub-Saharan Africa (Salary grade W 1)

The successful candidate will have experience in university teaching and research (preferably internationally). Areas of research expertise should include, but are not limited to empirical environmental conflict research, comparative analysis of dynamics of violence and the causes of war, political science research on Africa (experience in field research).

The appointee will manage a Junior Research Group on the topic Global Change – local conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa. She or he will teach Political Science in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and work with colleagues on interdisciplinary research projects of Freie Universität Berlin.

7. Freie Universität Berlin, its Center for Area Studies, with the Department of Political and Social Sciences and the Department of History and Cultural Studies, invites applications for a Professorship in Governance of Global Inequalities (salary grade W 2; 5 years)

The appointee will have a PhD in the field of social sciences (preferably in social and cultural anthropology, but also political science or sociology) or in the field of area studies with a proven focus on social sciences. She or he will have excellent knowledge of qualitative research methods, especially ethnographic methods. The successful candidate will have substantial experience in field research focusing on trans regional aspects.

The appointee is expected to participate in the development of a research area in the field of Governance of Global Inequalities at the Center for Area Studies.
