Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG) along with other consortium members, including HCSA, DFG, DAAD and the Goethe Institute, New Delhi, co-sponsored/organized the 4th public lecture of the DWIH Joint Lecture Series – ‘Understanding the Cosmos’ by renowned astrophysicist, Prof. Matthias Bartelmann from the Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, Heidelberg University. Prof. Bartelmann obtained his PhD from Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Garching in 1992 and has been a recipient of Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society. He worked as a senior researcher at MPI, Garching from 1995-2003, after a post-doctoral visit to Harvard Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics from 1994-1995. Since 2003, he is a full professor of astrophysics at University of Heidelberg. Among other achievements, Prof. Bartelmann was responsible for German participation in the “Planck” satellite project from 1998-2003.
The public lecture was held at Max Mueller Bhavan/Goethe Institute, New Delhi on the 28th of January 2014. Participants engaged in a lively discussion with Prof. Bartelmann after the talk and the event concluded with a reception dinner.
