Max Planck Institute for Mathematics' new director awarded the highest distinction in Mathematics

Peter Scholze, professor at the University of Bonn’s Hausdorff Center for Mathematics and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics was presented with the Fields Medal. The 30-year-old is only the second German to ever receive this prize from the International Mathematical Union during the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro. Considered as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, the Fields Medal is awarded every four years to recognize ‘outstanding mathematical achievement for existing work and for the promise of future achievement’.
